Colour, it’s something that we see and use every day. But how many colours
are there?
The best answer I can give is there is an infinite amount!

Conventionally there are
seven basic colours in the spectrum - Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo,
and Violet.
But, the colours in the
spectrum blend into each other, so you could say that there are thousands of colours
in the spectrum, and each of these colours has its own subset of colours.

But let’s say we work
predominately in web or print work, for this your answer might be 3 or 4.
Why only 3 or 4?
Ok, the 3 colours RGB, Red,
Blue and Green, are the additive primary colours that are output from your PC
monitor, TV or mobile phone. When added together in varying intensities these
primary colours can produce a whole subset of different colours, including
white.
The 4 colours, Cyan,
Magenta, Yellow and Black are used for producing print work. Colour printers
use CMYK printer ink
to produce countless secondary colours through a range of different printing
techniques such as halftones, pantones, etc. Although manufacturers are
increasingly adding more colour ink cartridges to their range such as, orange, red, blue, green
and even grey printer ink.
