The Red Arrows

The RAF's world-famous Red Arrows aerobatic team will perform a fly-past over Nottingham, our local city, on Saturday 29th June.

A spectacular programme of events and activities is planned to honour our Armed Forces past and present

The Red Arrows, officially known as the Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team, is the aerobatics display team of the Royal Air Force based at RAF Scampton. The team was formed in late 1964 as an all-RAF team, replacing a number of unofficial teams that had been sponsored by RAF commands.

Armed Forces Day parade will march through the city centre, all armed services represented. Displays continue afterwards on the Victoria Embankment.

The Breuninger Shoe Store in Stuttgart, Germany

The Breuninger Shoe Store in Stuttgart, Germany installed this ‘homage to the madness of women about buying shoes’ by Dutch artist John Breed, who created this colourful installation. Built in a vast complex, formerly an industrial space, it is the largest in Europe.

Representing the obsession that most women have with accessories, especially shoes, the artwork of wall mounted legs, is based on the head of Medusa with her hair of waving snakes, but to add a more feminine and seductive aspect to his work, he replaced the snakes with 145 multi-coloured female legs, each one wearing a different shoe. After spending days mixing the paint in a rainbow of graduating shades, he painted each leg and shoe, the former with a slight difference to the latter, a reference to the habit of women to buy shoes very similar to the ones they already own!

How many Crayola colours are there?

For over 100 years kids have been creating and exploring the world of colour with crayons.  For most of us our lifelong love of colour began with a sheet of blank paper and a box of wax Crayola crayons.

But do you know how many colours Crayola crayons currently come in?

Crayola crayons currently come in 120 colours including 23 reds, 20 greens, 19 blues, 16 purples, 14 oranges, 11 browns, 8 yellows, 2 greys, 2 coppers, 2 blacks, 1 white, 1 gold and 1 silver.

Here they are:
Although Crayola crayons come in 120 different colours, the labels are only made in 18, which cover the full colour spectrum.

Nearly 3 billion crayons are made each year, an average of 12 million daily. That's enough to circle the globe 6 times with colour!

The artwork below was produced using crayons.

Fly Geyser - Nevada

Located about 100 miles north of Reno, Nevada, is the tiny town of Gerlach. Twenty miles north of that is Fly Ranch, home to one of the most unique geysers in the world.

The most striking aspect of the Fly Geyser is its vibrant colors, which are caused by thermophilic algae. The erupting water leaves behind calcium carbonate deposits that have accumulated over the years and have formed the large geyser mound and multiple terraces. Thermophilic algae thrive in these conditions, creating the brilliant red and green hues that give the geyser its unforgettable look.
